NEW BUILD HOUSE - THORNBURY, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE
As architects based in Bath and Bristol, we are well versed in developing designs for contemporary rural structures, and this is one of our latest sustainable new build housing project in the open countryside near Bristol.
Studio Four Point Ten were appointed as architects for this self-build project on the outskirts of Thornbury, just north of Bristol, nestled within the rolling landscape of the Severn Vale and escarpment. This contemporary designed house in the open countryside has low-energy and low-carbon principles at its core, ensuring a truly sustainable new build that harmonises with its setting on multiple levels.
Our approach goes beyond designing a home—we are passionate about integrating sensitive contemporary design within the landscape, ensuring a seamless connection between building and garden. The project includes a thoughtfully crafted landscape design, reinforcing the relationship between home and nature, and transforming outdoor spaces into an integral part of daily living.
This site presents complex planning challenges, as it falls within the influence of the Thornbury Conservation Area, an area with rich heritage and strong community ties to its surrounding greenbelt land. Our expertise in working on challenging rural sites allows us to sensitively respond to these constraints, balancing innovative architectural design with the historical character of the area.
Our passion for landscape-led design is evident in this project, as well as in many of our previous works. We recently explored this topic in an article showcasing our garden and outdoor space work, demonstrating how we weave landscape and architecture together to create holistic, immersive environments.
The scheme has been submitted for planning approval with South Gloucestershire Council, and we look forward to seeing this sustainable, contemporary home take shape within its stunning rural setting.
