BARN CONVERSION - PLUCKLEY, KENT

Sensitive Barn Conversion in the Kentish Countryside

Located in the heart of the Kentish countryside, this project showcases a sensitive barn conversion that seamlessly integrates contemporary architectural design within a historic setting. Studio Four Point Ten was appointed as architects from an early stage, developing a design concept that evokes the appearance of a traditional farmstead, a common sight in the area surrounding Pluckley. By carefully splitting the structure into two parts, we retained as much of the existing footprint and fabric as possible, ensuring the project remained sympathetic to the building's history.

Blending Old and New in Contemporary Barn Design

One volume of the conversion features a striking open-plan living space, distinguished by an exposed vivid yellow roof structure. This bold design choice reflects the golden rapeseed fields that dominate the landscape in summer, preserving a connection to the site’s seasonal beauty even in the depths of winter.

The second structure accommodates modern interior design elements, housing bedrooms, bathrooms, and utility spaces. The master bedroom and a luxurious freestanding bathtub are positioned to maximise the breathtaking southwesterly views of the countryside, creating a tranquil retreat within this historic framework.

Sustainable & Off-Grid Design Approach

Sustainability was a key driver in this project. The barn conversion is designed to be as off-grid as possible, featuring an air-source heat pump for heating and hot water, high-performance insulation, triple glazing, and a ventilation system with heat recovery. Additionally, integrated solar panels contribute to the building’s energy self-sufficiency, reinforcing our commitment to environmentally conscious architecture.

This project exemplifies how historic barns can be sensitively transformed to accommodate modern living while respecting the building’s past.
