NEW FORESTRY SHELTER - ALMONDSBURY, BRISTOL
We are excited to share an intriguing design project that showcases our expertise in traditional craftsmanship and community-led endeavours. We were approached as the architect to lead on the design of an important undertaking with the Co-forest Initiative at their Founders Wood site near Bristol, to build a new timber shelter and storage structure.
Our objective was to design a new timber frame shelter, intended to serve as a refuge for the dedicated volunteers participating in the Co-forest Initiative. This project aims to restore and enrich the site through tree planting and the creation of a new forest, with a strong focus on sustainability and ecological diversity. The structure would provide much needed space to shelter from the weather, and a secure place to store materials and tools used at the site.
Constructing on a remote and challenging site, careful consideration is required around the materials used, size of structural components and appropriate construction techniques that could be utilised. Our design approach prioritised the use of sustainable materials and an easily reversible design strategy, honouring the natural surroundings while minimising our impact on the environment.
Screw pile foundations will provide the anchors to the timber frame with its expressive cross-over roof frame structure and decorative slatted timber cladding. Beneath the bold red corrugated metal roofing stands a cylindrical storage drum clad with red stained timber slats. Behind its curved doors is space to secure forestry equipment in the dry, and a cleverly concealed kitchenette facility facing the main shelter space.
We embrace the opportunity to engage the local community of volunteers in the construction phase of the work, to foster a sense of ownership and collaboration. This inclusive approach will not only enrich the project but also empower individuals to contribute to their environment.
Our primary goal was to create a simple yet distinctive architectural structure that seamlessly blended into the gentle woodland setting. We meticulously crafted a design that harmonises with the natural beauty of the site, evoking tranquility and a strong connection with nature.
